Navy Tests Containerised 3D Printing Factory at Sea During RIMPAC 2026
When a reverse osmosis generator bushing failed aboard the USS Somerset during RIMPAC 2024, the crew faced a familiar dilemma. Ordering a replacement through normal supply channels would have taken weeks, possibly months. Instead, they printed and machined a new one in 34 hours using a containerised manufacturing unit parked on the flight deck. That unit, Snowbird Technologies' SAMM Tech system, is back for RIMPAC 2026 with a larger mandate and a more ambitious test programme.
US NAVY REAFFIRMS MELTIO·S 3D PRINTING TECHNOLOGY ABOARD USS SOMERSET
During RIMPAC 2024, the largest multinational maritime exercise globally, the USS Somerset crew faced the failure of a reverse osmosis pump crucial for potable water production. Without this part, the ship’s mission could have been jeopardized. However, with the SAMM Tech system—integrating Meltio's wire-laser Directed Energy Deposition (DED) 3D printing head and a FANUC-controlled CNC system—the part was fabricated aboard in mere hours.
The Navy Deploys 3D Printers at "World's Largest" International Naval Drills
The United States Navy is leveraging metal and polymer 3D printers during the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise in Hawaii, running until 2 August 2024. 40 ships, 150 aircraft, three submarines, 14 land-based armed forces and 25,000 personnel from 29 nations are participating in the military exercise, reportedly making it the world’s largest international series of naval drills.
3D Printer Solves Engineering Challenges Onboard USS Somerset
When the team of engineers from the Consortium for Advanced Manufacturing Research and Education (CAMRE) loaded their 3D hybrid-metal printer onboard Somerset as part of the experimentation sector of Exercise Rim of the Pacific 2024, they had no idea that they would soon be asked to solve a real-world engineering casualty. "The appearance of U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) visual information does not imply or constitute DoD endorsement."
Snowbird to participate in TRIDENT WARRIOR/RIMPAC metal Additive Manufacturing assessment event
Snowbird Technologies, Jacksonville, Florida, USA, has announced that it has been selected by the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Consortium for Advanced Manufacturing Research and Education (CAMRE) – the lead for Additive Manufacturing education and research at NPS – to participate in the 2024 Naval Experimentation exercises TRIDENT WARRIOR and RIMPAC to employ advanced manufacturing capability to afloat readiness challenges at the point of need.
Pentagon Asks Industry for Ideas to Protect Supply Lines
The Indo-Pacific theater stretches from the coast of California to the western shore of India, consuming more than 50 percent of the Earth’s surface with mostly water. When the Pentagon declared the region its priority theater, another challenge inevitably surfaced: contested logistics.
